Find me on:

Southwest Consulting Associates (SCA) is proud to announce the celebration of their 1-year anniversary of new ownership under President, Michael G. Newell.  Mr. Newell acquired the company in September of 2013 from founder David P. Pfeil, who retired after 25 years at the helm of SCA.

Mr. Newell brings more than 30 years of healthcare financial management experience to the head of SCA.  Michael began at SCA as Vice President of Audit and Appeals in 2007 and oversaw SCA’s client support activities in these areas before being named Chief Operating Officer in 2011.   Prior to joining SCA, Michael was the Vice President of Reimbursement Services for Triad Hospitals Inc., now Community Health Systems where he engaged SCA as a Medicare DSH consultant in 2001.  Michael detailed his reasoning for engaging SCA as, “choosing SCA not only for the company’s technical expertise but also because of its commitment to compliance and getting it right.”

When asked about transitioning his career from hospital operations to consulting, Michael stated, “I didn’t hesitate a bit when the opportunity to join SCA presented itself in 2007 or when, in 2013, the opportunity to acquire SCA presented itself,” says Newell.  “The benefit that I have is the ability to see the company from both sides, first as a client and then as a member of the team. I wanted to continue SCA’s long legacy of adding superior value to the hospitals that we work with and once David Pfeil decided to retire, the one sure way to do that was to acquire the company.”

Newell’s background in overseeing reimbursement for various hospitals and multi-hospital systems brings a unique perspective to SCA in that Newell views the business from a hospital perspective and can match hospital needs with unique, tailored services.  Newell’s approach has allowed SCA to expand its services to hospital clients nationally.  This wealth of broad ranged experience best positions SCA to assist hospitals in navigating through a rapidly changing environment.

I am most excited about SCA’s continued ability to provide value to our clients,” adds Newell.  “The healthcare finance environment has experienced steady change during my 30-year career with numerous spikes of big change over the course of the last 30-years. Having spent the bulk of my career in the shoes of our clients, I am excited about bringing that unique perspective to our service development and approach.  SCA’s team is second to none and are uniquely qualified and positioned to support our hospital clients as they navigate through this latest set of “big changes” enacted through the Affordable Care Act.”

SCA has continued to deliver exceptional service to clients seamlessly since the change in ownership in 2013 and since 1989, has been a leading provider of DSH reimbursement, compliance and appeal services.  SCA’s services now also include 340B and S-10 compliance evaluation, Affordable Care Act reimbursement forecasting and additional data services.  To learn more, visit www.southwestconsulting.net.
